Weird World

An exercise in creating setting.

The ground is red and frozen dust. As far as the eye can see, the world extends on one flat plane. There are no hills in the distance, there are no valleys, and there are no forests. There is only this desolate waste. Even the most hardy of weeds will never grow in the soil. In the sky, huge twin suns and a sister moon weave a celestial pattern, and after they have sunk beyond the horizon another smaller sun and four more moons will rise.

As you cross through the red desert, you will see the large holes sunk deep into the earth, as though tunneled by gigantic moles. They are filled with water, dark and churning. You cannot see the bottom no matter how hard you try. Should you sit by one of these deep wells long enough you might catch a glimpse of those creatures that dwell within.

Perhaps you will see a glimpse of large round eyes watching you, or a long tentacle that flails around the edges of the well with a grotesquely human-like hand. Perhaps you will not see anything until after you have traveled away from the well and have turned around, just to be sure that no one is following you only to find that there is something jutting above the surface of the water, watching you.

Perhaps you will never see anything at all.
