The Proposal

Waiting by the front door, the girl was more nervous than she had ever been. He had said to be dressed for a night on the town, that he would pick her up at six o'clock, sharp. And so, she had put on her best dress, tried her hand at what little make-up she owned, and sat down to wait. And she waited. Not any great amount of time, just five minutes, but the girl was worried for her beau. Just as she was giving up hope, the doorbell rang, three short buzzes, their signal to each other. She opened the door and raced down the stairs, straight into his welcoming arms. "I got stuck in traffic on my way over," he started, " Would that I could have grown wings to be by your side sooner." The girl smiled up at him, and he helped her into his car. He took her to dinner, not the most expensive restaurant in the city, but the one with the best view of the city lights. He flattered her shamelessly throughout the entire meal, and she spent more time laughing with him than eating. Eventually he decreed that they must leave the little restaurant, or they should be late. He helped he bundle up in her winter cloak, for it was growing cold outside. As they walked out to his car, in the back of the parking lot, the sky opened up, and the rain came down all around them. With a laugh, he grabbed her hand, turned her to face him, and kissed her. When the kiss broke, they ran hand in hand to the car, and set off for the next mysterious destination. Within a half an hour they pulled up out side of Her Majesty's Theater, for the 7:30 play. He rushed her inside, keeping his hand over her eyes, so she would not yet see what was playing. When she stumbled on the stairs, he picked her up, and carried her the rest of the way to their private box. Just as they took their seats the play started. "Perfect timing, as usual, my love" he whispered in her ear. And as the first strains of music drifted to her ears, she gasped. "Phantom, oh, thank you, thank you, I love this play..." she told him. He smiled at her, and excused himself to go get a program, and she whispered to the empty box "... as I love you..." He came back, with the programs, and handed the girl one. When he sat back down, he took her hand in his own, and didn't let go until intermission. The curtain went down, and the lights came up. Announcements were made, concerning the opera house shoppes. As the announcements began, he excused himself once more, only to reappear moments later, on the stage below, microphone in hand. He stumbled over his words for no more than a few seconds, and she listened with wide-eyed awe. " I love you more than anything in this world, will you marry me?" he asked the girl. And in that moment, she knew that this was what she had waited her entire life for, that he was the only thing in the world that she wanted. She smiled at him, and in the silence of the opera house, one word echoed into the fabric of eternity, "Yes"...
